Understanding Your ELSA Pentagon Score

Are you curious about your English skills? Do you want to know which skills you should focus on to improve your English rapidly? Don’t worry… Your ELSA Pentagon is here to help!

In this short post, we’ll show you how it works and how you can use it to improve your English.

What’s the Pentagon?

Think of your ELSA Pentagon like a map that shows where you are, and where you want to go with your English.

The Pentagon uses two simple shapes to show your strengths and weaknesses in English.

Pentagon 3

The bright blue shape in the middle of the diagram is your current English level. Then, there’s a bigger shape on the outside, like a star with five points. Each point stands for a different English skill:  Grammar, Vocabulary, Intonation, Pronunciation, and Fluency.

How Should I Use the Pentagon?

The Pentagon helps you see what you’re good at, and what you need to work on.

If the corners of the blue shape match the points of the Pentagon, it means you’re doing well in those skills. But if the corners are far apart, those are skills you should improve on. As you practice and get better, the blue shape will get closer to matching the Pentagon.

Your ELSA Learning Path is designed to help you improve on all these skills already, but here are some additional tips and tricks that might help you fast-track your progress.

Tips to Improve Each Skill:

  • Grammar: Practice with exercises or simple sentences. Research grammar rules online or ask a friend to help you.
  • Vocabulary: Try to learn new words every day. Read books or watch videos in English to discover new words in context.
  • Intonation:  Intonation is how your voice goes up or down as you speak. To improve, listen to how people talk in English. Try copying their tone and rhythm. It will help others understand you better.
  • Pronunciation: This means the ability to say the sounds of English clearly so you can be understood. To improve, practice saying English sounds and words in different contexts. Listen carefully to people who are very comfortable in English and try to imitate them.
  • Fluency:  Fluency means your ability to control the speed of your speech by making good pauses, and connecting ideas when you speak. To improve your intonation, use English whenever possible, even if it’s just a little bit each day. Talk to friends or practice reading out loud.

In conclusion…

The journey to English fluency can take time, so be kind to yourself, and remember that making mistakes is a normal part of the journey.
