
World Cup Vocabulary (Part 1)

1. Referee
Definition: An official who watches a game or match closely to ensure that the rules are adhered to and (in some sports) to arbitrate on matters arising from the play.
Example: In Portugal – Morocco match, the referee gave a penalty to Portugal.
2. Captain
Definition: A person who is a leader of a team
Example: Cristiano Ronaldo is the captain of Portugal team
3. Goalkeeper
Definition: A player in soccer or field hockey whose special role is to stop the ball from entering the goal.
Example: Iker Casillas used to be the goalkeeper of Real Madrid.
4. Defender
Definition: a player whose task it is to protect their own side’s goal
Example: Gerard Pique is one of the greatest defenders in the world.
5. Forward
Definition: An attacking player in football, hockey, or other sports
Example: Lionel Messi is a talented forward.
6. Midfielder
Definition: a player in the central part of the field
Example: Alexis Sanchez is one of the most popular midfielders in the world
7. Full-backs
Definition: a player in a defensive position, playing at the side of the field in soccer and hockey and behind the other backs in rugby.
Example: If a full-back receives a red card, the team will be easier to be attacked.
8. Coach
Definition: An instructor or trainer in sports.
Example: Miura is the coach of Viet Nam team.
9. Winger
Definition: An attacking player on the wing in soccer, hockey, and other sports.
Example: A winger is usually a player with great pace.
10. Centre-backs
Definition: A defender who plays in the middle of the field
Example: Sergio Ramos is the center-back of Spain.
